WATKINSVILLE - The Artland of Georgia

The City of Watkinsville was originally known as "Big Springs" before being named Watkinsville in 1802. Located in Oconee County, Georgia, Watkinsville became Oconee County's seat after Oconee County was formed in 1875. On March 30, 1979, Watkinsville's South Main Street Historic District was entered into the National Register of Historic Locations. In 2006, Watkinsville residents proudly celebrated the City's 200th birthday with a number of events and celebrations.

Today, Watkinsville is a vibrant small town with an attractive business district including a beautiful new Streetscape that makes walking, shopping and enjoying downtown Watkinsville an easy and pleasant experience.

Watkinsville is home to a number of wonderful shops, restaurants and businesses where people are always greeted with a warm smile, friendly service and reasonable prices. Watkinsville is also the center of the Arts in Northeast Georgia. The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, located in Watkinsville, is a non-profit organization that provides instruction and sales for regional artists.
